Rice Krispies...are only good with marshmallows.

Exhausted. Hella hella tired! Maybe it's because I walked my ass off yesterday?
I did the usual walk to/from downtown to work but didn't walk the 20x (we had a staff meeting) and didn't get to do the walk up the hill because it was drizzling. Even if it wasn't drizzling I was practically snoring on the bus anyway and wouldn't have gotten off to do it!

My calorie burn is lower today and I'm not feeling too hungry. It's spicy ahi Friday, but I already had spicy ahi earlier this week and since the calorie burn isn't high today, I thought maybe if I just got a Jamba Juice that would perk me up (but still keep the calorie count in a deficit). So Maui and I went out and I picked up a Mango Mantra, supposedly only 180 calories for a 16 oz. serving. I really want to stay away from "fast food" (to me, this is fast food) at least during the challenge period, but I just had to go someplace to try to energize somewhat.

We usually go shopping (or in my case, window shopping) on Fridays but again, I was tooo tired. Bah! I will make it a point to get up early tomorrow to do...something active!

OH...I almost forgot. I frickin forgot my usual cereal today. Fortunately I still had an old (well, not old, but I brought it to work 2 weeks before the challenge) box of Rice Krispies. Personally, I only like krispies topped on vanilla ice cream, or made into marshmallow treats! Otherwise, krispies just seem like packing peanuts to me. So I added 4 tsp of the Bear Naked berry fit granola along w/ the cereal. Tasted a little better. Note to self: next time, remember your cereal!

Bros, Toes and Hos! (just kidding about the last one)

Taken by me at MoMA, NYC, June 2009

I think I'll start off my blog entries with something interesting or a new word. How about this, a new phrase of the day:

What a gwaan, mon!!
! (Jamaican slang for, What's going on, Man?)

I bet you're wondering; WTF is up with that photo up there? Well, when the challenge started, my boss asked if sex counted as "exercise" (or shall I say, sexercise :). Studies show that vigorous sex will get your body burning 300 calories an hour. Since I obviously haven't and probably won't be doing any of the above activities anytime soon (Aww sh*t, wait! No WONDER I've been GAINING weight these past few years. :s hehehe), there's no way to test out this Bodybugg to see if those studies are true! So, for now, I'll stick to my walking regimen instead. :p So peeps, burn it up on those bedsheets, try out all those funky positions and have fun! But use protection and wash up after, or else you might be burning in OTHER places that shouldn't burn! Hahahah! Ewww!

I dropped off my bro at the airport and drove in to work. $8 for parking. Arrrrgh. Got in early so decided to do my 20x before breakfast. I don't know why, but sometimes this part of the walk reminds me of Poltergeist. Not because there's a poster of a garuda (gargoyle-looking mythical bird) on the wall at the end, but there's this part in the movie where the mother is running down the hall and the hall keeps getting longer and longer and longerrrrrrr...LOL:
...and longer and longer and longer!

As a sidenote, that movie also made me HATE clowns with a passion...remember that clown under Robbie's bed? *shudder*! If I ever have kids, they're settling for Barney at their bday party, not a damn clown!

I forgot lettuce for my tofu-stuffed whole wheat pitas for lunch (yes, gotta make use of that dang failed tofu "burger"), but it actually tasted pretty good. Went home early so I could bring Mom to dialysis. I even packed a snack to take along with me:

After I got her set up, I decided to face my fears: walk from the mall to the shopping center across the street (.62 miles round trip). Now, I know it sounds crazy...that's such a puny distance to be afraid of, considering that I walk, walk walk all over the place now and good distances too compared to 3 weeks ago. But remember that the last time I walked this route back in March, I had a panic attack due to that stupid medication my doc gave me which I didn't need! So yes, I'm chicken. But my eyebrows needed waxing, so I said what the hell, I'm going...and I walked to the nail salon next to the gym where I had a panic attack and never went back (yet!).

Put my headphones on...walked over...started getting hot...but I made it! Wooo!!!
Like Gen. MacArthur said, "...I shall return!" (to this gym someday, that is). For now, I'll settle for the nail salon 50 yards away. Hehehe!.

Now my eyebrows are squeaky clean! I was so proud of myself that I treated myself to a nice pedicure. On credit. SHHHHH, don't tell Dave Ramsey. I swear I will pay it back in full on payday! I swear!

Hibiscus toe! Gee, my toe looks kinda deformed! :o

I walked back, picked up my books to sell at Book Off, then walked to the other side of the mall for more exercise. Borders has a nice coupon for $2 off a magazine (they never have discounts on magazines!) and $5 off a DVD, so I treated myself (yes, on credit. SHHH! I did use the $7 I made at Book Off towards some of it) to a magazine and a workout DVD that looks interesting. The DVD is promoting a $20,000 prize (total $100,000 split between 5 winners) for those who use the DVD and transform themselves. HMMMM...I think I'll enter! The magazine has an article on walking for weight loss, so obviously I had to pick that one up!

As I went to the checkout line, the usual gremlins were there to greet me. Some were on sale, and some even had a special if you bought two bags of them...I took their photo, ignored their cries of BUY ME! and paid for my non-consumable stuff:
Chocolate bars based on the Twilight movie! I rather eat these than watch that crappy flick! (sorry fans, I just didn't get that movie)
Truffles...try freezing them before eating. Pretty good!

I kept walking around on that side of the mall, up stairs, down stairs:
In stores, out of stores:
Looks like a shirt for a hoochie...cut up and tied all over to expose bare skin! Kinda cool, it says Green is Good. I'd wear this if I had the body for it. But I'm still debating on whether or not it is an environmental statement or advocating a "different" kind of "green". That leaf shaped icon above the text sure looks a lot like...a leaf...from a certain "plant"...hmmm. :o

Pastry House opened up a shop near Macys! I did walk inside just to look. I'm surprised my mouth didn't start watering at all the yummy goodies in the showcase. Guess I'm a zombie or something:
This is a safe distance for me. Hahaha!

As I headed off to return to the other side of the mall, I passed through Tilt arcade when a flurry of people in the corner (some lined up) caught my eye:

What the...I swear, it was like LAS VEGAS in that place. Everyone was playing some sort of electronic slot touchscreen looking game? For money, I think? I stayed long enough to snap this pic and I left. I am curious about it though; I'll return to ask what the deal is...because if it IS for money, then I'm just wondering how legal this is...hmmm!

Finally got back to the other side of the mall, just in time because Mom started cramping again. I kind of hesitated to post something this personal, but if anyone needs a wake-up call as to why they need to start taking care of their health now, here it is. This is her dialysis machine:
That's 2 needles in her arm (thicker than the wire handle on those chinese food take-out boxes; that's how THICK the needles are), treatment is 3 times a week for 4 hours to clean out the toxins in her blood because she didn't take care of her diabetes back in the day. You can't move during the treatment, you just have to sit there and watch TV. Sometimes you have cramps so bad, kind of like how a "charley horse" feels like, but worse. So to those of you who complained about the tiny fingerstick we got during our assessment, you'll be complaining a lot more about pain sooner than later if you don't take care of yourself NOW. This f*cking sucks, believe me. You do NOT want yourself or your family to go through this.

If you have the chance to change your not-so-good habits now, why not do it? You're never too old or too young or too lazy. Think about your family, your girlfriend/boyfriend, your kids, your grandkids. Do it for them too. Because if you don't, they're going to be the ones who have to take care of YOU because you were too lazy to take care of yourself when you should have.

Look at me, 3 weeks ago my only exercise was my short walk from the bus stop to work. Then from my room to the kitchen to get ice cream. Now my fat @$$ can walk over 10,000 steps a day, even with plantar fasciitis, itchy eyes, and yes, phantom fears of a panic attack...for the sake of trying to improve my health (yes, prize money is nice, but it's not guaranteed), YOU can do it too. No more excuses. Like my Nike shirt says:

I Gained 41 lbs. in 9 Years But Won a Lunch Bag! :D

Here we are again, Hump Day Wednesday!

The usual walk from Downtown to work then work to Downtown. And of course, The Hill. Grrrr...I just KNEW the bus driver was going to stop at the bottom for a cigarette break; forcing me to get my @$$ out and walk up up up. I figured I'd walk up to the 1st bus stop before the start of The Hill and wait for the bus again, skip The Hill and get off at the top of The Hill and walk the rest of the way home. But NOOOOOOOOO...someone "up there" (or maybe down in Hell, I dunno) musta wanted a good laugh because I was maybe 50 feet or so away from the bus stop and...the damned thing passed me by. ARRRRGH! Oh well, guess I was meant to burn more calories (and hopefully FAT) today. Even though I'm getting used to walking now, it's still rough to do with all the extra weight. But I'm trying. The rest of the week is going to be tough for exercise, since tomorrow I need to take my bro's car to work so I can leave earlier to bring Mom to dialysis (so no a.m., lunch or p.m. walk) and we have a staff meeting during lunch on Friday so I can't walk around the office at lunch. Guess I'll do TKB or if I'm brave, I'll go to the gym while Mom is at dialysis. Still too chicken though. Hehehe!

Hey!!! Wait! Wait for me!!! Aaah...son of a cracker! Oh well.

We got our results from our Health Pass screening today (the blood tests and such). Much to my dismay, they actually had records from the first time I went to Health Pass (2000, when I was 24) and the last time I went (2006). Since 2000, I have gained 41 lbs., but my good cholesterol levels (HDL) are better. I'm not going to beat myself up over the numbers. I just need to BM@$$ so the numbers get better! Mwahahahah!!!

I was a bit alarmed when the Health Pass educator/nutritionist asked for me. I'm like errr oh crap what did I do now? But she wanted to give me a little lunch bag for answering a question correctly at last week's fitness workshop (How many calories in a pound? 3500). Yey, Me!

Since it's really small, I suppose they're trying to hint that my meals should be small enough to fit in here.

Went shopping for a webcam (trying to find a way to minimize these international long distance calls by using Skype instead or something) with Mom, and came home to make Tofu Burgers. Or shall I say, ATTEMPT to make tofu burgers. It was $2.59 for this packet of bread crumbs and seasoning (I had to add more seasoning in fact!) which you're supposed to mix together with firm tofu and form into patties (that came out okay). BUT as soon as you put them in the skillet, they fall apart and turn into scrambled egg consistency. I bought this packet before but used a different tofu brand, but this time I used the same brand as the seasoning and it STILL came out funky. So much for giving second chances. I ended up putting a patty crumble between 2 slices of toasted oat bread and lettuce. Visually disappointing but it still tasted okay for dinner. I guess I'll eat a tofu scramble with breakfast. LOL!

Talk about false advertising! Looks nothing like the package.

My tummy was hurting last nite (kept going to the bathroom) and again today. Wondering if it might be all the roughage of raw broccoli? Hmmm....

Triple B's! Blueberries, Blue Ball and Broccoli!

Strawberry is the flavor of the month at Napoleon's Bakery! I only noticed this because I have to pass by this case every Tuesday and Thursday on my way to Mom's dialysis clinic. LOL! I did stare at the whole wheat brownies for a few seconds...wonder if they are "healthier" because they are made of whole wheat? Nahhhh....

But anyway...today was a slightly rainy day, I got off downtown this time but only saw baked goods and fruits and veggies for sale at the open market, so I just kept walking. It is a bit difficult to balance an umbrella and iPod in my hands in addition to carrying breakfast/lunch/snacks/drinks/work clothes in my backpack! I seemed to manage though.

My boss (who's actually on maternity leave) brought some low-fat muffins to work today! I took one, ate half for a.m. snack and the rest for a p.m. snack. Boy were they yummy. One of our engineering interns brought in salmon dip and crackers. I had some the last time he brought them in and I KNOW they are tasty but i'm not sure if I can control myself to eat just ONE salmon topped cracker. They are truly that "ono" (delicious)! I just admired the salmon dip from afar. Hehehe.

We had Toastmasters today, so no walking in the office today, no walking in the office tomorrow (nutrition workshop at lunch for points), and no walking on Thursday either (need to leave earlier to bring Mom to dialysis; bro is going to Vegas). Since I have his vehicle for the weekend I could drive to work on Friday but I'll save the $8 parking fee and ride the bus/walk instead. :)

I had a problem with a map so ended up leaving work an hour later than expected, so I couldn't walk into town to catch the bus to the mall. I did a little walk to the other side of the mall to pick up my new glasses and also bought a cheap medicine ball at Ross. Only 4 lbs. (I think someone stole the 10 lb ones...there were 4 empty boxes and no balls), but I figure maybe it can help me w/ different ab exercises since I'm really having trouble with crunches. My tummy "locks up" and it HURTS like hell; I need to bend backwards to try to unlock it and straighten it out! Scary!

I'm tempted to paint the face of Bloo (Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) on this ball, but it reminded me of how Tom Hank's made"Wilson" in the movie Cast Away. I might get too obsessed with Blue Ball as my only companion against the war on fat! Heh!

My boss and cubicle mate have been raving about this broccoli salad from Costco. It has broccoli, carrots, sliced something else and packets of dressing, nuts and bacon bits inside. I'm not usually a fan of raw broccoli, like the type on veggie platters, but this stuff is pretty good! And crunchy! I didn't have any bacon bits though. Wooo spicy ahi for dinner too! (I didn't buy it, I promise)

Ohhh it's Monday

I'm still sore. WTF! I thought it would've gone away by now. Mostly my inner thighs and shins are hurting. Then again, those were the exercises I had concentrated on during my walk on Saturday and the weights in the afternoon (plie squats, those naughty adductor machines, and the walking, of course). I really really didn't want to get off at Chinatown because I still hurt. Plus it was raining. BUT I got off and bought some apple bananas and a dragonfruit.

At lunch I forced myself to do my 20x around the office. I pushed myself, even though it hurt and I was tired. Thankfully Dave Ramsey kept my ears and brain company, so I didn't feel it much. No walking partner today, she had to leave earlier. I just saw from the Bodybugg chart that I took 4330 steps during those laps and at one point was burning 8 calories/min. Nice! Walking does help!

I didn't walk The Hill this afternoon as I had planned to do Turbo Kick when I got home. Unfortunately, Dad was mopping when I got home. Greeeeat. And now its time for dinner so can't workout now either (I'm in their way). Guess I will have to adjust my dinner intake to still have a deficit. :(

Pain and Popcorn

I didn't post yesterday because...I couldn't get out of bed! My body was sore sore sore!
Get up! It's 9 a.m. and I haven't had breakfast yet!

I don't think I got out of bed until about 1 p.m., when my brother asked if I wanted to go to the movies. I never realized that there really isn't anything healthy to eat/drink at the movie theatre. Maybe the closest thing to semi-okay was gummy fruit snacks or maybe dark chocolate Raisinets. I admit that it was very difficult to not even have one piece of popcorn or sip some diet soda. Luckily we were watching a scary movie, so that took my mind off the buttery, fatty but oh-so-yummy popcorn that my bro was eating.
Large popcorn = 1640 calories. WTF!

Next time, I should not skip a meal. I didn't eat lunch, so by the time the movie was over I was starving. I mean STARRRRRRRRRRRRVING. I ate way too much chicken stew and quinoa when I got home. Then I ate some cherries. And an orange, I think. Oooops!

Sunday counts are way way low because I didn't do jack! I was too sore! I forgot what I ate, I should've entered it into my iPhone as soon as I ate it. Grrrr.

Spicy Ahi Part Deux, The Hill, BM@$$ and...The Gym???

Okay, so I didn't get up to do Gilad. I did get up however, after reading a high-school friend's Facebook message (thanks Denise, I'll reply after dinner :).

When I first started this challenge, I'll be honest, I said, "I'm doing this for strictly for the money." After I read my friend's message saying she likes my blog and also mentioned her wanting to also get on a healthier life path for her son, I dunno what came over me. I got up. I put on my workout gear and walked out the door! I don't have any significant other or kiddies, so I need to do it for me. One of my favorite quotes is an old Latin adage (hey Denise, remember that afterschool class??) that states:

Si vis pacem, para bellum: "If you wish for peace, prepare for war". This is usually interpreted as meaning peace through strength. I like to think of it as, "if I'm going to win this war on FAT and be a more beautiful, sexy me, then i'm going to have to have to BUST MY @$$!
Hehehehe...that's what I'll call my plan from now on...the BM@$$ program. Bust My @$$ and whip it into shape!

With that being said, I walked up the Bus Stop mini-hill, down The Hill, around to Blockbuster, past the church, then...back up The Hill! Man it was hot. My feet hurt too! I'm wondering if these new gel insoles arch supports/Nikes are causing my arch to feel funny? Hmmm...

By the time I realized it, I had walked 2.94 miles in an hour. Yeah, seems kinda slow, but you gotta keep in mind that most of the path consists of the ridiculous incline of the infamous Hill.

Went to some garage sales with Mom, didn't buy anything though. Oh wait, I did buy a Woodstock (of Peanuts/Snoopy fame) statue for $3. :) Then...ummm...I had a craving for spicy ahi AGAIN!!! Don't worry, I didn't have sushi! :) Went to Tanioka's Seafood, and much to my dismay there was actually a LINE to get in the place!
You know the grinds are good when there's a SECURITY GUARD at the door!
Hurry up people! I need my spicy ahi and marlin!

The YUMMY but fried goodies case

Mmmmmmmusubi! Bentos too!

Ahhh...1/2 lb spicy ahi and 1 lb of Marlin!

Lunch! 5 oz. marlin, quinoa and veggies!

After lunch, we dropped off Mom to dialysis and went to...Coast Guard Gym! Wow, I haven't been there in at least a year I think, maybe more. The last time I lost weight, it was because of walking and going to this gym (not 24 Hour Fitness). I was a little nervous at first (remember, last time I went to the gym at 24 Hr. Fitness Pearlridge I had a panic attack), but I was able to do most of the circuit machines and did some free weights. Also shot some hoops (not sure if I'm saying it the right way...hoops? baskets?) for about 5 mins. afterwards.

OMG I'm at the gym!

Hip adductor machine...looks naughty! I like it!

Glutes machine! Work dem buns!

workin' da triceps

New kicks on the seated cable row machine

Picked up Mom at dialysis and went to Down to Earth for quinoa...thank God they finally had the bulk quinoa, much cheaper than the pre-packaged ones. :) I'm still debating on what to eat for dinner. I ate an apple, and at 8:00 I ate Mom's leftover 1/2 egg salad/1/2 chicken salad sandwich. Hmmm...spicy marlin maybe? :D Nah...turkey sandwich instead!
Time to go rest my shins! Not bad for a usually "sleep in bed all day" Saturday! Maybe I'll sleep in tomorrow?
